Essay # 1. Meaning of Electric Welding:

Electric welding is a process in which two or more than two similar or dissimilar metal pieces are formed together by heating them to a suitable temperature so that they fuse together at the desire place. The heating is localised.

A filler is also sometimes used. All metals can be joined together by one welding process or another. Some metals are easy to weld and others are difficult to weld. In general, metals that have low melting point would not be welded.

The welding maybe of various types e.g. Gas welding, Electric welding and Electron beam welding. The electric welding is used for the construction of bridges, welding tanks, steel frames and machine parts made of plates. It is also used for repairs. Moreover welding is the most efficient way to joint metals.

The two most important principle of electric welding are Resistance welding and Arc welding. In case of resistance welding pressure is generally applied but in case of arc welding, it is avoided.


Essay # 2. Methods Used for Electric Welding:

The selection of proper method will depend upon the metal to be welded, its thickness and properties expected of the weld.

The following methods are commonly used:

1. Left ward welding

3. Vertical welding

1. Left Ward Welding:

It is also known as forward welding. In this type of welding, the filler rod is held in the left hand and blow pipe in the right hand. Welding starts at the right-hand side and proceeds towards the left.

Position of blow pipe and filler rod is shown in Fig. 4.1. This method is widely used for butt welding of steel plates.

2. Right Ward Welding:

It is also known as backward welding. In this welding filler rod follows the blow pipe during welding operation.

Filler rod and blow pipes are held as usual in the left hand and right hand side respectively and the welding starts at the left hand side and proceeds forwards the right side as shown in Fig. 4.2. This method is very widely used for welding steel plates.

3. Vertical Welding:

This is a very useful and economical method of welding which can be employed for metal plate of any thickness, but only when it is possible to place these plates in a vertical plane. In this method edge preparation is not required so considerable saving is effected in time and money on account of this factor as well as in the corresponding consumption of the filler rod.

Welding starts from the bottom of the plates and proceeds upwards along the same. In this method the filler rod moves ahead followed by the blow pipe. Inclination of filler rod is 30° in all the case.

Requirements of Good Weld:

1. The main requirement of good weld is that it should be free from external defects such as irregular width and heights of beads.

2. The weld should have even colour.

3. Even width of weld.

4. Absence of surface defects like, crack and surface porosity.

5. Absence of internal defects like blow-holes, incomplete penetration etc.

Point to be kept in view to avoid the Weld Defects:

1. Proper arc length should be maintained.

2. Welding current should be selected according to the nature of job.

3. Correct welding technique should be used.

4. The electrode of correct type and size should be selected.

5. The joint penetration of the work pieces to be welded should be done properly.
